Paint additives are auxiliary materials used in the formulation of coatings. They can enhance the performance of coatings and facilitate the formation of paint films. There are many types of coating additives, including drying agents, toughening agents, emulsifiers, thickeners, pigment dispersants, defoaming agents, leveling agents, anti-skinning agents, matting agents, light stabilizers, mold inhibitors, and antistatic agents  etc.

Most of their names are based on their functional characteristics. Wetting agents, dispersants, emulsifiers, and defoamers are used to improve the coating production process. Antisettling agents, anti-skinning agents, preservatives, and freeze-thaw stabilizers are used to enhance the storage and transportation of coatings. Anti-sagging agents, leveling agents, anti-floating agents, defoamers, and thickeners are used to improve coating application performance and prevent film defects. UV absorbers, light stabilizers, flame retardants, antistatic agents, and mold inhibitors are used to enhance coating film performance and confer special properties.

Leveling agents are divided into organic silicone leveling agents and non-organic silicone leveling agents. Organic silicone leveling agents are categorized as polyether-modified and alkylaryl-modified types. Non-organic silicone agents are divided into polyacrylate-based and fluorocarbon-modified polyacrylate-based types.
