Wood paint is a specialized coating applied to wooden surfaces to enhance their aesthetic appearance and protect them from environmental factors such as moisture, UV rays, and wear and tear. This type of paint is designed to penetrate wood fibers, providing a durable finish that can last for years.

Type One: Polyester Paint

Polyester paint uses polyester resin as the main film-forming substance. High-end furniture often uses unsaturated polyester paint, also known as piano paint. The characteristics of unsaturated polyester paint are: a single application can achieve a paint film thickness of up to 1 millimeter, unmatched by other types of paint; the paint film is full, clear, and transparent, with hardness and glossiness superior to other types of paint; it has better water resistance, heat resistance, and short-term light flame resistance than other types of paint; unsaturated polyester paint has poor flexibility and is prone to brittle cracking under stress, and once the paint film is damaged, it is not easy to repair, so care should be taken during relocation.

Type Two: Polyurethane Paint

Polyurethane paint creates a hard, wear-resistant film that can be polished to a high gloss. It is resistant to water, heat, and acids and bases, making it a high-quality advanced wood paint.

Type Three: Nitrocellulose Paint

Also known as spray paint or lacquer, nitrocellulose paint is based on nitrocellulose, combined with synthetic resin, toughening agents, solvents, and diluents. The transparent base material without nourishment is known as nitrocellulose varnish, and the opaque liquid with color is called nitrocellulose enamel. Nitrocellulose paint can achieve a high gloss after polishing and is a commonly used paint with good decorative performance.

Water-Based Wood Paint

Definition: Water-based wood paint, also known as waterborne paint, uses water as the primary solvent. The main ingredients include acrylic or polyurethane resins, which provide a protective coating once the water evaporates.

Performance Characteristics:

• Drying Time: Water-based paints dry quickly, which allows for faster recoating.
• Odor: They emit less odor compared to oil-based paints, making them more suitable for indoor use without strong ventilation.
• Color Retention: These paints tend not to yellow over time, preserving the original color better.
• Clean-Up: Clean-up is easier with just soap and water.
• Environmental Impact: They are generally more environmentally friendly, emitting lower levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Solvent-Based Wood Paint

Definition: Solvent-based wood paint uses natural oils or synthetic alkyd as the solvent. These solvent interact with oxygen to harden, forming a durable layer.

Performance Characteristics:

• Drying Time: Solvent-based paints dry slower, which can lead to a smoother finish as the paint has more time to level out.
• Odor: They emit a strong odor, necessitating good ventilation during application and drying.
• Color Retention: These paints may yellow over time, especially when exposed to low light.
• Clean-Up: Requires solvents such as turpentine or paint thinner for clean-up.
• Durability: They are typically more resistant to wear, making them suitable for high-traffic areas and exteriors.

Matte Paint

Matte paint is primarily based on varnish, mixed with an appropriate amount of matting agent and auxiliary materials. Depending on the amount of matting agent used, the glossiness of the paint film varies. Matte paint has a soft, uniform, thin gloss, is temperature-resistant, water-resistant, and acid and alkali-resistant.

Classified by whether the paint film is transparent: Varnish

Varnish refers to paint that, once applied, still allows the wood’s grain and color to be visible. The paint film is smooth and full, and the appearance is crystal clear. This type of paint is suitable for high-end furniture with beautiful wood grain.

Semi-transparent Paint

Refers to paint that, once applied, allows the original grain to be clearly visible and has a tinted effect. This product is suitable for furniture with clear grain and less than perfect wood quality.

Color Paint

Refers to paint that completely covers the original color and texture of the wood, only showing the color of the paint itself. This product is suitable for cheaper materials such as plywood and MDF furniture.

Open Paint

Open paint is a finishing technique that fully reveals the pores on the surface of the furniture wood, primarily composed of polyurethane. The characteristics of this paint include: clear pores, distinct texture, strong natural quality, and a matte effect, but its cost and spraying techniques are relatively high, making it a higher-grade paint.

Closed Paint

Closed paint is a finishing technique that buries the wood pores under a transparent coating layer, primarily composed of unsaturated resin. The characteristics of this paint include: a full, thick, bright paint film on the furniture surface, and a smooth surface. It is a commonly used painting technique on the market.
